India is a land of festivals where all the festivals are celebrated with great joy and gaiety. Dussehra is one of the major festivals of Hindus. Dussehra also known as Vijayadashmi is celebrated every year 20 days before Diwali. It is celebrated on the tenth day of the Shukla Paksha of the month of Ashwin, and from then onwards winters arrive. Kharif crop is grown in this season. The festival of Dussehra is celebrated in India as well as in Bangladesh, Malaysia etc. Along with India, this day is also a holiday in Malaysia. This festival falls in September or October.

It is said that if Rama had not killed Ravana, the sun would have set forever. There is a story behind every festival. There are many ancient stories behind celebrating the festival of Dussehra. It is said that on the day of Vijayadashami, Shri Ram killed Ravana. He had obtained the secret of killing Ravana by worshiping Goddess Durga. Secondly, it is believed that Maa Durga killed Mahishasura on the day of Dussehra after nine days of war. This festival is celebrated as the victory of good over evil and truth over falsehood.

People carry the idol of the mother in trucks with a bandwagon. Children also celebrate the festival of Dussehra in schools with great joy and gaiety. Small children dress up as Rama, Sita, Lakshmana and Hanuman. Dussehra asks us to end the evils inside us. We should burn all the evil inside us along with the effigy of Ravana. This festival is the festival of power which brings with it lots of happiness. This festival fills people with goodness and devotion.

The festival of Dussehra is a confluence of purity and power, which is celebrated as a symbol of the defeat of the demonic power. This festival gives us the message of victory of virtue over sin and tells that it is the duty of human to fight against the tyrant, so we should be brave and courageous.
